Simon Winter

Executive Director, Syngenta Foundation

As TechnoServe’s Senior Vice President of Development, Simon was responsible for leading and managing strategy and strategic planning, knowledge management, thought leadership and program development. He was also responsible for managing and incubating innovative programs, such as access to finance for small- and medium-sized businesses. Previously he was TechnoServe’s Regional Director for Africa. He joined TechnoServe in 2003.

Simon acquired business advisory and strategic skills as a management consultant with McKinsey & Company, where he co-led the firm’s international development practice. Prior to that, he learned about practical development solutions while working as an economic planner for the Botswana government and a development consultant in southern Africa. He also worked in finance and banking with Barclays Bank plc in the United Kingdom, Côte d’Ivoire, and Australia.

Simon is a founding Executive Committee member of the Aspen Network for Development Entrepreneurs (ANDE), a member of the Advisory Board of NextBillion, and Board Member of the East African Leadership Initiative Foundation. He holds a PhD in development economics from the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London, a master’s degree in development economics from the University of East Anglia, and a bachelor’s degree in economics from Bristol University. Simon is a native of the UK.
