2020 Annual Report: A Time to Act

by Root Capital

May 2021

In 2020, our world faced challenges that none of us could have predicted. In the face of uncertainty, Root Capital, our supporters, and our client agricultural enterprises around the world took action. Together, we were able to keep rural communities safe by protecting lives and preserving livelihoods. Over the course of the year we:

  • Financed 185 businesses who bought coffee, cocoa, grains, and other crops from 684,000 farmers—84% of these loans were to businesses that couldn’t obtain similar financing from a commercial bank;
  • Trained 281 businesses on the financial and agronomic skills they need to build resilience in the face of COVID-19, climate change, and other threats. Women, for the first time, made up 35% of all participants in our workshops; and
  • Supported 3.3 million people in farming families around the world when they needed it most.
